VIDUSHI DR.NIRMALA BALWALLI is a wellknown name in Hindustani Classical Vocal Music. She is disciple of vocalist Pt Vinayak Torvi, doyen of Gwalior–Kirana Gharana gayaki. She has many years of Sadhana in khayal gayaki, and has equal parishram in Bhakti sangeet – Marathi Abhanga, Hindi Bhajan, Kannada Dasavani and Vachana. She has participated in major music festivals like Hampi Utsav, and won hearts of audiences through her soulful singing in India and abroad.
At home, surrounded by musical ambience created by her parents Smt.Meerabai and Shri Marutirao Balwalli, Nirmala developed deep love for music. She began training in music at a tender age of 10 and became disciple of Pt. Naganath Wodeyar of Kirana Gharana. When her academic pursuit brought her to Bengaluru she joined Pt.Vinayak Torvi and continued in-depth study of nuances of raagadari sangeet in Gurukul system. She has imbibed the soulful singing style from her Guru. Gifted with a melodious voice, her performances are marked by detailed badhat of raag, layakari, taans and unstinted devotion in bhakti sangeet.
Dr Nirmala is a music Guru and is teaching music to several music aspirants. She is the founder of ‘Anahata Naad’ Center for Classical Music affiliated to Pt.Vinayak Torvi Music Foundation. Goal of this center is to nurture, develop and spread Torvi Parampara of Hindustani vocal music in Gurukul system.
Nirmala is native of Karwar, grew up in Hubballi, had her collegiate education upto M.Sc. in Hubballi-Dharwad. A multi talented girl, while excelling in studies she excelled in all extra curricular activities like NCC, Scouts and Guides, Sports, and won many prizes in competitions like debate, singing, drama, painting and so on.
Professionally, Nirmala is a scientist and provides Research and Development Consultancy to Healthcare and Biomedical Device Industry. She has a Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry with specialization in Biomaterials Science, from Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. After her Ph.D. She has worked with great Multinational companies like 3M and GE Healthcare in senior manager positions and made great contributions in the Healthcare segment. She worked extensively with Hospitals and Health Care professional organizations across India towards setting standards for Infection Prevention and Wound Management in Indian Hospitals. She has wide experience of 22 years as a Manager of Research Strategy, Innovative product development, and Industry-Academia R&D Collaborations.
